Nowadays a great number of people are affected by various sleeping problems. These problems are sometimes called sleeplessness or insomnia. Statistics affirms that about 30-50 % of people experience different sleeping problems, besides, 10% of population suffer from chronic sleeplessness.
Nevertheless, insomnia itself is not a diagnosis, it is rather a sign or a symptom of various health troubles. Insufficient quantity of sleep and its bad quality can lead to sleeping problems. Still, we cannot precisely define the number of hours a person should sleep a day, this number varies from person to person. Many people, suffering from insomnia, do not even think that this problem can be easily treated. Still, there are many methods of insomnia treatment.
Types of sleeping problems
The problem of insomnia classification consists in the fact that it is based on the sleeping duration. But many researchers do not agree with such an approach. Nevertheless, there are the following types of insomnia:
- short-term insomnia, its symptoms and signs last from one to three weeks;
- transient insomnia, lasting just for several days;
- chronic insomnia, lasting for more than three weeks.
Statistics about sleeplessness
Unlike many other health problems, insomnia may happen at any age. According to statistics women experience insomnia more often than men do. Sleeping problems usually increase with age. Population with low socioeconomic status and chronic alcoholics enter the group of risk for sleeping problems, as well as people with various mental diseases.
Transient insomnia and a short-term one can occur because of stress, they do not last long, still being not cured can become chronic problems. According to American surveys about 35% of people have problems with sleeping, while 10% of population experience long-term insomnia. Anxiety and depression are the leading factors for insomnia occurrence.
Group of risk
Except population with low socioeconomic status, people with mental diseases and chronic alcoholics, there are also other people, entering the group of insomnia risk. They are travelers, shift workers, elderly people, students, pregnant women, women in menopause and drug addicts.
Causes of insomnia
Stressful situations and depression are the main reasons for sleeping problems. Insomnia may also occur in the result of proper drug usage. They may be medications for asthma and cold treatment, medical drugs for high blood pressure treatment, medicines for depression or anxiety treatment and stimulants.
Sleeping problems can also be caused by weight loss. But sleeplessness in its turn increases the hunger of a person and in the result of it metabolism of the body is affected. People with sleeping problems find it difficult to maintain and lose weight. Besides, sleeplessness may increase the storage of fat in the organism, interfering metabolism process, which may lead to the problem of high level of blood sugar.
